Three reasons why women aren’t going for smear tests - and why you should [please!] go to yours

Smear test”.

We hear the words and our bodies slightly cringe.

Perhaps that’s because the words don’t roll off the tongue all that nicely, perhaps it’s because we are conditioned to be embarrassed about vagina talk…but that’s another huge argument for another day.

About 3 million women across England have been avoiding their smear test for at least three-and-a-half years.

Regardless of the reasons we avoid talking about smear tests, the fact of the matter is – too many of us are avoiding the smear tests themselves.

Screening rates are at their lowest in twenty years - about three million women across England have been avoiding their smear tests for at least three-and-a-half years.

It’s not good ladies – it is not good.

But look, we’re not here to tell you off. We get it – there’s a million and one reasons to be scared.

We understand you might...

1. ...be embarrassed

Let’s be honest - no one enjoys getting their vagina out for a stranger / doctor with even stranger tools.

There’s a major taboo around the topic that makes us feel we should be self-conscious.

I’m writing this article in the library right now and worrying about who’s watching over my shoulder.

But why?!

Vaginas are normal, natural parts of our body and these tests could save our lives. Fiona made a really good point in the pod that medical care regarding HPV, smear tests and general sexual health needs to stop being sexualised to the point where we don’t talk about it, and start being treated like any regular check-up.

Going for a smear test doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you – it means you’re looking after yourself and your body.

And to the girl sat next to me reading this – hi, yes I’m writing about smear tests - go get your test girl.

2. ...not know what the test involves

I’m not going to lie, before reading up on the subject - I had no idea what the craic was either.

I still don’t know the full itinerary, but the information is there to prepare.

Look let’s be realistic - it’s not going to be a day out at Alton Towers, but is any doctor’s appointment really that great?

Just think of it as any other examination - a check-up by a professional that has your best interests at heart!

3. ...not want to know if anything is wrong

Sometimes we seem to think that if we don’t know about it, it doesn’t exist.

Whilst we are lucky enough to have free healthcare - let’s make the most of it!

Sorry to break it to you huns, but this really isn’t the case - in fact quite the opposite.

The quicker you identify any problems, the better the doctor can sort it out.

SO, all we’re saying is…

As a group of women who are unfortunately considered too young to be given the right to have smear tests – all we ask is that those of you who can get them...please try your best to pluck up the courage and go for it.

It might feel a bit awkward, it might not be the first thing you fancy doing, but it could save your life!
