Welcome to the Free Period family

Updated: Feb 23, 2019

Hello! Greetings, salutations, any other requisite social niceties that will draw you in, and set you at ease. Draw up a chair and join the group. There's room for many more at this table. We're all very excited to tell you all about what we're (attempting) to achieve here, and to start to convey this narrative to you all.

The conception of Free Period Pod was the easy part; as MA Journalism students, across the spectrum of Broadcast, Magazine and Print, we understand and admire the collective value of different forms of communication. It might be an understatement to say that ideas and opinions are certainly not in short supply amongst us. And it certainly wouldn't be an overstatement to say that we could talk it out for hours on end, given the chance.

The actual creation of the project has been something that was much slower to come to fruition. What started as the idea for an intramural netball team soon metamorphosed into something infinitely more exciting. I suppose we quickly came to realise that our motivations lay elsewhere; what we lacked in sporting prowess, we made up for tenfold in other skills.

“As MA Journalism students, across the spectrum of Broadcast, Magazine and Print, we understand and admire the collective value of different forms of communication. ”

As young 'millennials' - to lay claim upon the phrase bandied about so often disparagingly in the media- we do not suffer from a lack of topics to mull over. As young millennial women, we are blessed, and sometimes cursed, with even more content and controversy to sink our teeth into. From the light-hearted to the ludicrous, many subjects warrant a curious eye cast over them. A little insight into female perspectives never hurt anybody. While we all have many shared interests, it's great that everyone has their own voice, and passions too, meaning that a broad range of topics can be explored.

So after too many exclamations of 'we really must do this', often over a pint or two, we finally sorted our act out, and here we are. There's bound to be teething problems, but we're happy enough muddling along, learning as we go. We hope you enjoy listening, reading and engaging with us and our content as much as we enjoy creating it.

So from all of us here at the Free Period Pod, you are cordially invited to join us on this crazy creative road-trip. Welcome, thank you, and buckle up, because if anything is certain it's this: it's going to be one hell of a ride.

Love,

Fiona, Lydia, Liv, Ellie, Amelia, April, Laura & Lauren x
